Save, Give & Spend
Most budgeting apps are a record of what already happened — a tidy report of money that’s already gone. Unicorn Money runs the other direction. You decide where money is going before it goes there, and then you get to live your month without second-guessing every coffee.
That whole idea rests on three simple buckets.
The three pillars
Every dollar you bring home lands in one of three places:
- Give — money that leaves to do good: generosity, gifts, the causes you care about. It goes first, on purpose, because it’s easy to mean to give and never quite get there.
- Save — money with a future job: an emergency cushion, a trip, a someday. Saving here isn’t “whatever’s left over.” It’s a decision you make on the way in.
- Spend — the money for living: groceries, gas, rent, the fun stuff. This is the bucket you actually touch day to day.
You choose how much goes into each. There are no preset categories handed down to you — you name what matters to your household.
The paycheck cycle
Most households don’t get paid all at once — the money arrives across the month, often as two paychecks, around the 1st and the 15th. Unicorn Money keeps that rhythm in view: you set your intentions for the whole month up front, then watch them play out as each paycheck lands. The plan is monthly; the money just shows up in pieces.
It keeps things close to reality — you’re planning for the month ahead with a clear sense of when the money to cover it actually arrives.
The Intentions Ritual
At the beginning of the month, you sit down for a few minutes and set your intentions. That’s the Intentions Ritual, and it’s the heart of how Unicorn Money works.
In the ritual you decide, for the month ahead:
- How much goes to Give, Save, and Spend
- What the month needs to cover — a bill that’s bigger than usual, a birthday, a trip coming up
- What’s left for Free Spend
It’s meant to be a short, honest conversation — with yourself, or with your partner, or with Una alongside you. Not a chore. A check-in.
Free Spend
After the intentional buckets are set, whatever remains is Free Spend — yours to enjoy with a clear conscience. This is the part people are surprised by: once you’ve decided on purpose, you don’t have to track or agonize over the leftover. It’s already accounted for. Free Spend is permission, not a leak in the plan.
Within the Spending tab of the Now section, you can pin categories that you want to set targets on and monitor more closely.
Plan ahead, don’t look back
Here’s the shift, and it’s the whole thing: you do your thinking before the money moves, not after.
Other apps ask you to look backward — to reconcile, to categorize what already happened, to feel a little bad about it. Unicorn Money asks for a few minutes up front, and then trusts you to live. When the plan is set, the spending is just spending. No end-of-month reckoning. No catching up on data entry to find out how you did.
Set your intentions. Then go live your month.
